Green Giant or Emerald Green for privacy?

Start with the width available beside your patio, pool area or property line. Then compare the height you can buy with the space the tree needs when mature. A closer row is not a substitute for choosing a plant that fits.

Green Giant Arborvitae
Long property lines and tall screens. Mature width: 12–18 ft. Planning spacing: 5–6 ft (4 for faster overlap).
Emerald Green Arborvitae
Smaller yards, tight spaces, a neat formal hedge. Mature width: 4–5 ft. Planning spacing: 3–4 ft.

The size you order is the sale height, not the eventual screen height. New trees may have gaps between them. Growth and how quickly those gaps fill depend on the plant, site and care; photographs of an established row do not promise immediate privacy.

For a fence comparison, consider the view you want to block, room for mature branches and ongoing watering. Confirm boundaries and any placement restrictions before settling on a row.

What is your planting site like?

Use these questions to narrow your choices. Include what you know in your inquiry; a planting-area photo helps show the space.

  • How much direct sun reaches the row, and does water collect there after rain?
  • How much room is available for mature branches, including near paths, buildings and overhead utilities? Hedge spacing is not mature width.
  • Do deer browse nearby, and can you reach the planting with water during dry periods? Deer resistance is not a guarantee.
  • Is the site exposed to road salt or strong wind? Read the White Pine site cautions and Blue Spruce climate and drainage guidance if considering either tree.

A mixed screen can reduce the risk of one pest or disease affecting an entire row. Discuss plant suitability before fixing the layout.
